Gillen Primary School Steel Shade Structure
The project at Gillen Primary School in Alice Springs involved the supply, delivery, and installation of a steel shade structure in the central courtyard. It included environmental management, termite protection, site preparation with demolition and temporary fencing, block and concrete construction, and steel construction of trusses with shop drawings.
The structure was painted with a Dulux 2-part primer and top coat, and featured louver mesh with a Galvabond finish. Roofing shade fins, including cladding, were also installed. Variations included additional trusses, site preparation, steel construction, painting, and the installation of struts and sun mesh. Fixing details were upgraded with PTFE slide bearings, and additional trusses were fabricated with camber. An additional 12 fin frames were supplied and installed, painted per specification.
Objective & Challenges
The project objective was to create a durable, functional, and aesthetically fitting shade solution that would enhance the usability of the school’s central courtyard for staff and students. Key challenges included:
Design Coordination
Working closely with architects and engineers to ensure structural integrity, compliance, and seamless integration with the school’s existing facilities.
Precision Requirements
Achieving absolute accuracy in site measurements and fabrication tolerances to guarantee a perfect fit on installation.
Tight delivery timeframe
Completing the full onsite works within a three-week construction period following design approval.
Zero-defect delivery
Ensuring safety and compliance across all stages, with no defects or WorkSafe issues recorded.
Execution
The project was delivered under the management of Tim Young (Director/Operations Manager), who oversaw every stage of the works. Execution highlights include:
3D Laser Scanning
Used to capture exact site dimensions, ensuring accuracy in both design and fabrication.
Technical Drawings
Comprehensive shop drawings prepared to guide fabrication and assembly with precision.
Procurement & Fabrication
Quality steel materials were sourced and fabricated in-house, maintaining strict timelines and standards.
Onsite Construction
Installation was executed efficiently within three weeks, with full compliance to WorkSafe standards and zero disruptions to the school’s operations.
Outcomes
The completed shade structure now provides a safe, functional, and visually cohesive addition to Gillen Primary School’s facilities. Delivered on time, within budget, and with zero defects.
